You can swipe your HSA debit card to use tax-free money to pay for eligible healthcare products and services not paid by your insurance plan(s), including routine healthcare, hospital expenses, medications, dental care, orthodontia and vision care.

Do I need to submit receipts to prove that I used my debit card for an eligible expense?
You do not need to submit a receipt for each expense; however, you should maintain detailed records of expenses reimbursed with your HSA in case you are ever audited by the IRS.
What if my HSA does not have enough money to cover my transaction?
If you do not have sufficient funds for your purchase, your debit card will be declined. You will need to pay for your expense with another payment method and reimburse yourself from your HSA later by entering a transaction in the Participant Portal or withdrawing the same amount in cash from an ATM. Associated Bank ATMs are always fee-free.
My debit card transaction was declined – what should I do?
If are unable to use your debit card to pay for the product or service, for example because the merchant will not accept your card for your transaction, you will need to pay using a different payment method. You can then reimburse yourself from your HSA by entering a transaction in the Participant Portal or withdrawing the same amount in cash from an ATM. Associated Bank ATMs are always fee-free.
What happens if I use my HSA debit card for an expense that is not an eligible healthcare expense?
HSA funds used for ineligible purchases are subject to income tax and/or a penalty. If you mistakenly use your debit card to pay for an ineligible expense, you can either deposit the amount of the transaction back into your HSA or offset the amount with another eligible expense. What should I do if my HSA debit card is lost or stolen?
Contact Participant Services at 800-270-7719 or ParticipantServices@AssociatedBank.com right away if your card is lost or stolen. We will assist you in closing your current card and ordering a new card.
